The two main factors for designing low noise control valves are fluid velocity and noise frequency. Below the speed of sound, the energy level of noise increases with the eighth power of the flow velocity, which shows how important this factor is. At the same noise energy level, it is beneficial to increase the average frequency, because higher frequencies have greater attenuation when passing through the valve body and downstream pipe wall.
